The Reverend G. H. Gonner, along with several other Christians, under the leadership and direction of the Holy Spirit saw a need to have another church planted on the south side of town. They met and organized a church built on the solid foundation of Christ Jesus.
In 1909, the church was officially organized at Bethel Hall, which was located on the corner of Franklin and Selma Streets. Later, a building which was known as Allen Temple, was purchased on Montgomery Street. The committee, consisting of Deacons A. Reed, Saul McNeil, A. Verner, and Sister Hattie Lonnie, selected the name Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. The Cornerstone Laying Service for the new church was held in 1911, with Reverend Gonner as Pastor. Reverend Gonner’s pastorate ended in 1915. Between 1915-1930 there is little history known other than Mt. Sinai having two pastors during this 15-year period: Reverend Thompson and Reverend R. Rabzie.
In September 1930, Mt. Sinai called its next pastor in the person of the Rev. C. A. Jackson. Under his leadership in 1953, Mt. Sinai purchased two lots at 559 and 601 Montgomery St. with hopes to build a new edifice for worship. On September 11, 1959, Rev. Jackson was called home to be with the Lord. Ministers, Deacons and Trustees under Rev. Jackson included Ministers W. M. Humphrey, George Washington, and Frank Nickles; Deacons Joe Gill, Mira Gamble, Willie Myles, Louis Blunt, John Adams, Willie White, Mose Robinson, and James Myles.
Mt. Sinai was without a pastor for six months after the passing of Pastor Jackson. After much prayer, the church called Dr. C. C. Suggs, Sr. to serve as the next pastor in March 1960. Under Dr. Suggs leadership, the church was notified that the City of Mobile’s Urban Renewal Program would purchase the lots at 559 and 601 Montgomery St. which was the proposed worship site. As a result, in 1962, Mt. Sinai purchased the land for a new church at 860 South Warren St. where the church still stands today. On November 26, 1967, the congregation marched from 601 Montgomery St. to the new sanctuary on South Warren. Dr. Walter Vasser, Pastor of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church delivered the dedicatory sermon.
On September 3, 1977, the members of Mt. Sinai voted for the church to purchase the land surrounding the church. This land was purchased to add parking and foresight for an Education Building. The parking lot was completed in November 1977. In March 1979, the mortgage for the land surrounding the church was paid in full. The 70th Year Church Anniversary was held on August 3, 1980 and Mt. Sinai was officially free of all indebtedness.
On June 14, 1981, the groundbreaking service was held for the Education Building. Dr. J. C. Richardson, a member of Mt. Sinai and Pastor of the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, preached the sermon for the occasion. The Education Building was completed in October 1981. The dedication service for the Education Building was held October 14 – 19, 1981.
Pastor Suggs, Sisters Ranae Barren and Sarah Cobbs participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Brother Henry Preston, Chairman of the Trustee Board, presented the contract for the Education Building and Brother Jack Hollins, a trustee, presented the keys. The dedication sermon was delivered by the Reverend Marvin Langham, Pastor of the New Home Missionary Baptist Church. Other trustees present were Brothers Nora Saffore, John Paige, and William Kilpatrick. In the year 1990, Mt. Sinai mourned the homegoing of our beloved Pastor Suggs and voted for Dr. J. C. Richardson to be in charge until the Lord sent a new pastor.
After some time had passed, the church prayed and called the Rev. Dr. W. C. McNeil to be the next pastor on October 5, 1990. Pastor McNeil accepted the call and began his pastorate on November 4, 1990. Being a leader with a vision and full of the Holy Ghost Pastor McNeil set reorganization in motion. Under his leadership several ministers and deacons were ordained, and several trustees were appointed. Mt. Sinai was also blessed under Pastor McNeil’s leadership to take in ministers and deacons from other churches. Through Pastor McNeil’s leadership, by 1993, the church was free from all indebtedness. Pastor McNeil’s leadership also included several renovations and purchases including several updates to sanctuary, the church fellowship hall/education building, the adding of the Pastor’s study, parking lot upgrades, purchase of a marquee, new pulpit, Baptismal pool install, and the purchase of 862 S Warren St. Many of the renovations were completed by Bro. Wilbert Peyton who serves as a trustee. Pastor McNeil also represented Mt. Sinai in a rich way by serving as the President of the Southwest Baptist Convention a wing of the Alabama State Convention. Pastor McNeil’s commitment to Christian Education led way to The School of Christian Education that allowed members and others to receive credits for participation. Sis. Bessie Reese, a lifelong Mt. Sinai member was an instrumental part of this Christian Education effort.
Pastor McNeil retired after 30 years of faithful service and pastoring the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church on November 1, 2020. He was named Pastor Emeritus on Sunday, February 6, 2022.
On August 29, 2021, the church prayerfully elected and called Rev. Aarif G. Bradley to serve as the next pastor of Mt. Sinai. He accepted the call and began his pastorate on October 3, 2021, and currently serves. Under Pastor Bradley’s leadership, Mt. Sinai is growing and serving in the congregation and the community. Pastor Bradley has casted a vision that is in full force that is reinvigorating and reimagining the church to continually thrive in a changing world and generation to ensure Mt. Sinai remains a vital force in the community for years to come. Pastor Bradley has had many accomplishments in the short time he has served as pastor and believes wholeheartedly in an active church that serves the community and even builds small communities of believers within the church. We are excited about where the church is headed under Pastor Bradley’s visionary leadership.
Under the headship of Christ who is the head of the church and the help of the Holy Spirit, Mt. Sinai will continue to build upon its rich history unto the glory and honor of God!

The Scriptures
The foundation of our beliefs is the Bible which is God’s infallible inerrant written revelation of His Word. We believe that the scriptures, both the Old and the New Testament, are uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, fully sufficient, and serve as the supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (II Timothy 3:15-17; I Thessalonians 2:13; II Peter 1:21).
God
There is one true and living God, the Creator of heaven and earth, eternally self-existent as three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – each of whom possess all the attributes of deity and characteristics of personality (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10, 11; Matthew 28:19, 20; Luke 3:22).
Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is God incarnate, the Living Word (John 1:1-14), virgin born through the miraculous conception of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31, 35). He lived sinless (Hebrews 7:26, I Peter 2:22), and performed many miracles (known and unknown) through the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:22; 10:38). He atoned for the sins of men by dying on the cross as our substitute. Through his death He satisfied divine justice, reconciling men back to God, and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him. (Romans 5:8-11; I Corinthians 15:3; II Corinthians 5:21). He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died (Matthew 28:6; Luke 24:39; I Corinthians 15:4). He was exalted and ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father, where He, and He alone, is the only mediator between God and man, continually making intercession for those who believe in Him (Acts 1:9, 11; 2:33; Philippians 2:9-11). Jesus the Christ will come again to the earth to establish His Kingdom. When He comes, the dead in Christ shall be resurrected, the saved to eternity with the Lord, and the unbeliever to eternal suffering (Acts 1:11; I Corinthians 15:51; Hebrews 9:28; I Thessalonians 4:16).
Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit has come into the world to reveal and glorify Jesus Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to men. He convicts and draws sinners to Christ, imparts new life, seals them until the day of redemption, leads and aides in a life of holiness unto God not fulfilling the lust of the flesh, and equips them for service and work in God’s Kingdom bearing spiritual fruit unto the glory of God.
The Ordinances
We recognize two ordinances in the church – Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is done by immersion as is suggested in Scripture. All who repent and believe on Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized as they are physically able and have opportunity (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 8:26-38). Baptism is an outward sign of an inward spiritual renewal and rebirth. Those who are baptized make a declaration that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life (Acts 10:47, 48; Romans 6:4). Holy Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper, consisting of broken bread, the body of Jesus Christ, and the fruit of the vine, the shed blood of our Lord and Savior, is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ (II Peter 1:4); a memorial of His suffering and death (I Corinthians 11:26); our fellowship and communion with all believers (Ephesians 4:4-6); and our expectation of His second coming (I Corinthians 11:26).
Salvation
We believe that salvation is a gift brought to man by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. No man can work to obtain salvation by any means or degree. Salvation is received through the act of repentance (not just the confession) and confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. There is both inward evidence of salvation which is the presence of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16) and the outward evidence is through righteous and holy living unto our God (Ephesians 4:24; Romans 6:1-18)
Sanctification
Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication to God (Romans 12:1, 2; I Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12). Sanctification is the process whereby we are saved from the power of sin in our lives through a commitment to the spiritual disciplines of prayer, daily devotion and worship, the study of God’s Word, and the fellowship of believers (Romans 6:1-13; Romans 8:1, 2, 13; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 2:12; I Peter 1:5). Through salvation, all who are born again by the Holy Spirit can be assured of their salvation from the very moment they trust in and confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Believers can rejoice in the assurance of their salvation but are forbidden to use Christian freedom as an occasion for sin (John 10:28-30).
The Fall of Man
Man was created in the image and likeness of God. However, man committed sin by disobeying God. Thus he alienated himself from God and experienced not only physical death but also spiritual death. That fall brought all men under divine condemnation. Therefore, all men are born into a sin filled world with a sinful nature, totally unable to please God without regeneration, redemption, and renewal (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 3:23; 5:12-19).
